Reference Ace › Guides › Do NZ employers actually check references?
The honest answer: most do something, and the something matters.
Larger employers and agencies check properly. Smaller ones often make one informal call. Very few check nobody.
Dates, title, and whether the referee is real. Fabricated history fails even a light check.
Everything above plus the texture: specific stories versus vague praise. Briefed referees give texture.
Small, and shrinking as verification tools get cheap. Never bet an offer on being unchecked.
Usually one or two, often the most recent manager first.
Heavier checking is standard. Expect it and brief for it.
Reference Ace checks real examples of your work, confirms they're yours, and vouches for them to employers by name, always as an independent reviewer and never as a former boss. Got a referee already? We brief them and run the practice check before a real employer calls.
